Red Shiso is a traditional Japanese ingredient also known as "Beefsteak leaves" or "Red Perilla" in the West. It is usually preserved in salt and has an intense flavor that resembles anise.

In Japan the use of Red Shiso dates back hundreds of years and it is regarded as one of Japan's seven essential spices. Traditionally Red Shiso is preserved using salt.

Red Shiso is still a very new ingredient outside of Japan. It has a unique flavor that perfectly complements rice, meat and even dairy products. It is also commonly used to color pickles.

These whole red Shiso leaves are of exceptionally large size and ideal to wrap meat or rice. They also are a popular ingredient for making Japanese style pickles such as Umeboshi or pickled ginger. The leafs are preserved using salt and depending on the usage we recommend to first remove the salt in water.
